TOURVEST OFF TO ALEX TO HELP REBUILD HOMES FOR MANDELA DAY

Johannesburg, 14 July 2014 Integrated tourism group Tourvest will head off to Alexandra for Mandela Day on Friday18 July to rebuild ten homes for selected community members.

This will mark the fourth year that Tourvest will have been involved in this humanitarian initiative, bringing the total number of homes rebuilt over the four year period to 35.

The homes to be rebuilt are identified by the non-governmental organisation Afrika Tikkun, in consultation with the community’s leaders and social workers, as those belonging to people most in need of better living conditions.

Afrika Tikkun, which has Nelson Mandela as its patron-in-chief, provides education, health and social services to children and their families through centres of excellence in South African townships. Its mission is to develop children and the youth into contributing citizens and its projects are located in Diepsloot, Alexandra, Hillbrow and Orange Farm in Johannesburg as well as Mfuleni and Delft in Cape Town.

Tourvest chief operating officer Judi Nwokedi said the company enjoys a productive and rewarding partnership with Afrika Tikkun which, in addition to monetary contributions, also involves regular donations of food, blankets and stationery which are distributed to the children attending school at Afrika Tikkunâ’s centres and the community at large.

We have been told that the rebuilding of homes is among the greatest contributions we have made to date to the quality of life of those community members and that this initiative remains one of the most pressing needs in the townships, she said.

Over the last two years, we have invested considerable finances, manpower and logistics in this project and we see it as a symbolic gesture of what South Africa can achieve when corporate and civil society get together to tackle important social problems.
